About Us 沿革:
The Yoko Awaya Koto Music Conservatory (Awayakai) was founded in 1975 in Los Angeles by Yoko Awaya, a koto and jiuta sangen instructor and performing artist. The Conservatory is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the art of koto and jiuta sangen music and seeks to enhance Japanese cultural and ethnic awareness and appreciation not only in Southern California but also throughout the United States.
Yoko Awaya offers instruction in classical and modern koto (13-stringed Japanese harp), the bass koto (17-stringed harp) and the jiuta sangen (3-stringed banjo-like instrument) in Southern California. She has about 50 members and has graduated 18 with teaching degrees fro the Miyagi School of Koto in Tokyo. She and her students have performed in numerous engagements throughout Southern California and across the United States.
Yoko Awaya and Awayakai have received awards and recognition for their contributions and cultural services to the community from Nanka Kenjinkai Kyogikai in 1991, the Orange County Japanese American Cultural Association in 1993, and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in 1991 and again in 1999. She was recognized by the California State Assembly in September 1999 and by City of Torrance in 2004 for their outstanding contributions to the Japanese American community.

1994年 カリフォルニア州非営利法人 YoKo Awaya Koto Conservatory（粟屋陽子筝曲学院）創立
設立以来長年に亘り、日系各イベントを初め、ハリウッド映画音楽製作・演奏など年間50回以上の演奏活動を行い、米国社会に対する日本伝統音楽及び日本文化の紹介並びに普及に尽力し続けている。
その功績に対し、南加日系商工会議所、南加県人会協議会、オレンジ郡日系教会、カリフォルニア州議会、トーレンス市より、表彰状及び感謝状を授与された。
1976年以来約2年毎に演奏会を開催し、今回2010年10月23日のコンサートが第17回目となる。この間1985年から2000年までの8回のコンサートは、エルカミノ大学日本クラブの後援を得て、シニアシチズンの皆様を無料招待する等、数々の社会奉仕活動を行っている。
Biography 粟屋陽子略歴:
Yoko Awaya is one of the leading Koto artists in Southern California who has concertized in major cities throughout the United States. She was also featured in many motion pictures and in the studio recordings for Walt Disney World. Yoko Awaya studied koto and shamisen (traditional Japanese three-string instrument) in Tokyo, where she received her teaching credentials and masters degree from Miyagi Soke in Tokyo, Japan. After relocating to Los Angeles, she founded the Yoko Awaya Koto Music Conservatory (Awayakai) to promote cultural awareness and to advance the study of koto and shamisen. Yoko Awaya and her group have received critical acclaim and high recognition for their contributions and cultural services to the communities of Los Angeles.
Yoko Awaya's performance credits include solo apperances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchesra and the Japanese Philharmonic Orchestra of Los Angles (currently Asia America Symphony Orchestra). She has performed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Los Angeles Music Center, USC and UCLA as well as in other major U.S. cities and universities, including San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Macky Auditorium in Colorado, Colorado University, Lafayette College in Philadelphia and Jacobs Pillow in Massachusettes. She is a requested performer at tthe Grammy Awards celebrations and at the Japanese Consulate.
Constantly seeking to enhance the versatility of the koto, Yoko Awaya has transposed a wide range of music - from Baroque to Broadway - and has incorporated a variety of accompanying instrumentation from the traditional shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and taiko drums, to the Spanish guitar, violin, piano, and the Chinese zither.
東京出身。東京にて筝と地唄三弦を学び、宮城宗家より教師免許を授与される。ロサンゼルス移住後は、工藤かずえ師に学び、1974年に粟屋会を設立、1994年にはカリフォルニア州非営利法人粟屋陽子筝曲学院として認可される。
南カリフォルニアにおける筝奏者の一人として米国内で演奏活動を続け、ソロ奏者として、ロサンゼルス・フィルハーモニー・オーケストラ及びアジア・アメリカ・シンフォニーと共演し、ドロシー・チャンドラー・パビリオン劇場、UCLA、USC、サンフランシスコ音楽院、コロラド大学、ラファイエット大学等、数多くの大学や劇場で演奏している。
さらにハリウッド映画 「The Challenge」や「'Sword Killer」'など多くの映画音楽製作にも携わり、多数のラジオ、テレビ番組に出演し、ディズニーワールドのレコーディングにも参加。ハリウッド関係者の要請により、グラミー賞受賞者祝賀パーティ等で演奏。
2005年、「竹中真敬老チャリティーコンサート」で共演、2006年10月には「竹中真敬老チャリティーコンサート・イン・沖縄」にて沖縄県クモジ・パレット劇場にて演奏、2007年7月には「菅原洋一＆桑江知子敬老チャリティーコンサート」で共演し、好評を博した。
